U.S. Health Secretary Thompson Names Charmel to National Quality
Advisory Council
Derby, CT, December 13, 2004 – Secretary of Health and Human
Services Tommy Thompson has appointed Griffin Hospital President
Patrick Charmel to a three year term on the National Advisory Council
for Healthcare Research and Quality. The 21 member Council provides
advice and recommendations to the Secretary and the Director of
the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ) on priorities
for a national health services research agenda.
The Council is comprised of private sector experts who contribute
a varied perspective on the healthcare system and the most important
questions that AHRQ’s research should address to promote improvement
in the quality, outcomes and cost-effectiveness of clinical practices.
The experts represent healthcare plans, hospitals, consumers, purchasers
and researchers. Representatives of seven Federal agencies that
address healthcare system issues serve in an ex-officio capacity.
The agencies are: The National Institutes of Health, CDC, the Food
and Drug Administration, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services,
the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense Office
of Health Affairs and the Office of Personnel Management.
Among the public sector members of the prestigious group are: The
Honorable Newt Gingrich, Dennis O’Leary M.D., President Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO),
Donald Berwick M.D., President, Institute for Healthcare Improvement,
Arthur Garson, Jr., M.D., Dean and Vice President, University of
Virginia Medical School, Jonathan Lord M.D., Senior Vice President
Humana Inc., and Mark Pauly, Ph.D., Chair, Department of Health
Care Systems, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
In his role as President and CEO of Griffin Health Services Corporation,
Charmel is also the Chief Executive Officer of Planetree Inc., an
organization dedicated to personalizing and humanizing the hospital
experience for patients and their families. The Planetree Alliance,
a member organization, includes close to 100 of the most progressive
patient-centered hospitals in the country.
Putting Patients First a book about the Planetree patient-centered
care model and how it is implemented, co-authored by Charmel, was
named the 2004 Healthcare Book of the Year by the American College
of Healthcare Executives. Groups from more than 500 hospitals have
visited Griffin Hospital to learn about the Planetree model of care.
