Planetree International

In 2008, Planetree broadened its reach, cultivating interest in and adoption of patient-centered approaches to care across the globe. Planetree President Susan Frampton had an opportunity to address international
health care leaders when she was invited to participate in the 16th International Conference on Health Promoting Hospitals and Health Services in Berlin, Germany. She was subsequently contacted by the NHS in Scotland and has been invited to present there and discuss a collaborative project.

To further position Planetree as a global authority about patient-centered care, in June 2009, Planetree will host its first International Patient and Employee Centered Care Conference in Amsterdam featuring several international keynote speakers, including Dr. Gro Brundtland, former WHO director-general, Dr. Bridget Duffy, chief experience officer at the Cleveland Clinic, Sir Donald Irvine of Picker Institute Europe and Karen H. Timmons, president and chief executive officer of Joint Commission International. In addition, the second edition of the Planetree book, Putting Patients First, is being translated into Dutch for the conference and planning is underway for translation into additional languages, including Portuguese and Japanese.

This growing international interest in patient-centered approaches to care is also reflected in Planetree’s membership. Over the years, Planetree’s highly adaptable model for implementing patient-centered approaches to care has effectively transformed organizational cultures within a number of diverse
health care settings. Recently, cultural adaptations to the model have been introduced to meet the needs of patients, families and staff in other corners of the globe.Today, Planetree’s network includes healthcare organizations in Canada, the Netherlands, Japan and Brazil.

Japan

After several learning exchanges over the past two years, in December 2008 Kikko-kai Tane Hospital in Japan became the first Planetree affiliate in Asia. With a 304-bed acute care hospital at its core, Kikko-kai Tane Hospital delivers integrated health services to its community in the heart of Osaka. Specialty hospitals include an eye institute, rehabilitation center, long-termcare facility, two convalescent facilities and an outpatient care center. An impressive new hospital is scheduled to open in 2011 neighboring the city’s landmark Osaka dome. In June, Susan Frampton traveled to Osaka to educate more than 300 staff members on the Planetree philosophy. Later in the year, CEO Dr. Yoshitaka Ogawa attended the Annual Conference in Chicago and Tane Hospital representative and translator, KZ Morihiro, participated in a recent coordinator orientation. This exciting new partnership demonstrates that the values of patient-centered care resonate universally.

Netherlands

Led by Jim van den Beuken and Marcel Snijders, Planetree Netherlands continues to grow and influence the way healthcare is delivered in the Netherlands. In 2008, Haga Ziekenhuis was welcomed as the newest Dutch affiliate. As part of its mission of promoting patient-centered approaches to care, Planetree Netherlands developed a number of opportunities for engaging Dutch health care policymakers and administrators in exploring Planetree implementation. Planetree hosted three learning journeys this past year which provided the opportunity for more than 50 Dutch health care professionals to see patient-centered care in practice. In addition, approximately 35 Dutch health leaders attended the 2008 Annual Conference where they had the opportunity to learn from other affiliates, while also sharing their own adaptations to the model.

Brazil

Having officially joined the Planetree Membership Network in 2008, Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo, Brazil is on its way to realizing its goal of becoming the first Designated Patient-Centered Hospital in Latin America. Being the “first” is nothing new to Albert Einstein. It was the first hospital in Latin America to be accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI), the most important international healthcare accreditation group. In 2003, it was reaccredited by the JCI and in 2006 it became the first Latin American hospital to receive a third consecutive accreditation. Albert Einstein began laying the groundwork for its Planetree implementation efforts in 2008, with coordinator Claudia Pirani attending the Annual Conference and subsequent coordinator orientation.

Québec

For the Centre de réadaptation Estrie (CRE) located in Sherbrooke, Québec, 2008 was a momentous year, marked with three separate honors for its unwavering commitment to patients as well as its caregivers. Acknowledging exceptional caring for its caregivers, CRE was awarded first prize in its category (200-500 employees) for the Best Employer’s Challenge. Sponsored byLes Affaires Plus magazine, the Best Employer’s Challenge could be compared, on a smaller scale, with Fortune’s“100 Best Companies to Work for in America.” CRE was honored with another award, this time for patient care, from l'Ordre des psychologues du Québec (The Order of Québec psychologists). The award was presented by the Order to recognize non-psychologists and non-psychological organizations demonstrating unflagging commitment and involvement to significantly improve Québecers’ health and psychological wellbeing.

In December, CRE was formally designated by Planetree as a Designated Planetree Patient-Centered Hospital. CRE is the first Canadian hospital, and one of only eight hospitals worldwide, to have received the Patient-Centered Hospital Designation since the program’s inceptionin 2007. Plans to launch Planetree Québec in partnership with CRE in the first quarter of 2009 are nearly finalized. The partner organization will promote the Planetree model of care and coordinate implementation efforts throughout French-speaking Québec.
