In October 2007, Planetree announced the first five Designated Planetree Patient-Centered Hospitals – Fauquier Hospital inWarrenton, Virginia; Mid-Columbia Hospital in The Dalles, Oregon; Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, New York; Sharp Coronado Hospital and Health Care Center in Coronado, California; andValleyView Hospital in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. This announcement was the culmination of a twoyear pilot phase during which an application process and set of criteria were developed to recognize hospitals that have comprehensively implemented and sustained a culture of patient-centered care. Since that announcement, many other hospitals in the U.S. and several other countries have expressed interest in initiating the designation process.

Even before the formal launch, the Patient-Centered Hospital Designation Program had achieved significant milestones. After reviewing the designation criteria and process, The Joint Commission approved Patient-Centered Designation as one of the few national quality awards that it recognizes on its Quality CheckWeb site, along with such prestigious awards as the Malcolm Baldrige Award and Magnet status. In addition, several national experts joined the Patient-Centered Hospital Designation Committee to guide the development of the designation program after the pilot phase, including: Jim Conway, SeniorVice President at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement; Chuck Darby, former CAHPS Project Officer for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality; Nancy ster, Vice President for Quality and Patient Safety Policy at theAmerican HospitalAssociation; and Linda Kenney, President and Executive Director of Medically Induced Trauma Support Services (MITSS).
