Naomi Judd

1      1

Presentation Title:"Love Can Build a Bridge"

Biography:
“I’m a communicator” says Naomi Judd, “Whether I’m expressing myself through writing a song or a book or I am singing, acting, speaking at an engagement or even chatting one-on-one with a stranger on the street.  Finding a way to share common experiences is my grand passion.”

Naomi first expressed this passion of communication as half of country music’s most famous mother/daughter team, The Judds.  It was there, she first captured national attention during the duo’s meteoric rise.  Their popularity earned them 20 top 10 hits (including 15 number 1’s) and kept them undefeated for eight consecutive year’s at all three major country music awards shows.  In addition, the duo won five Grammy’s and a vast array of other awards and honors.  As a songwriter, Naomi also won a Grammy for “Country Song of the Year” with the Judd’s International hit “Love Can Build A Bridge.”

In 1991, after selling over 20 million albums and videos in a mere seven years and at the pinnacle of their phenomenal career, The Judd’s’ reign came to an abrupt end.  Naomi was diagnosed with Hepatitis C, a potentially fatal chronic liver disease that forced her retirement.  Their duet ended on a high note when their “Farewell” tour was the top grossing tour and their farewell concert was the most successful musical event in cable pay-per-view history.

With unwavering optimism and characteristic inner strength, Naomi stepped out of the spotlight to explore paths that have led to new successful endeavors.  Today, she is completely cured of the Hepatitis C virus and uses the strength of her own experiences as spokesperson for the American Liver Foundation.  In 1991, Naomi created the Naomi Judd Education and Research Fund, using her household name and personal time to raise invaluable awareness of the deadly Hepatitis C virus as well as research funds for the American Liver Foundation.

Though her creativity continues to flow through music and writing, today Naomi also expresses her energy on humanitarian activities, social issues and personal growth education.  Her natural ability to act as a translator between academic communities and everyday people makes her a truly unique figure.  Her background and knowledge on various health and family related issues has led to invitations to speak to countless conventions, seminars and high profile summits as well as numerous media awareness campaigns and Capitol Hill hearings.

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor

1       1

Presentation Title:"My Stroke of Insight" with a focus on Dr. Jill's personal story: why she grew up to study the brain, her research activities, and her own brain disorder.

Biography:
Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a trained and published neuroanatomist. Her specialty was in the postmortem investigation of the human brain as it relates to schizophrenia and the severe mental illnesses. Because she has a brother who has been diagnosed with the brain disorder schizophrenia, Dr. Taylor served for three years on the Board of Directors of the National NAMI organization (National Alliance on Mental Illness) between 1994-1997. Currently she serves as President of the Greater Bloomington Affiliate of NAMI in Bloomington, Indiana.

Because there is a long term shortage of brain tissue donated for postmortem research by individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, Dr. Taylor travels as the National Spokesperson for the Mentally Ill for the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center (Harvard Brain Bank) located at McLean Hospital. As the Singin' Scientist, Dr. Taylor delivers this very popular keynote address titled "How To Get Your Brain To Do What You Want It To Do."

But as irony would have it, on December 10, 1996, Dr. Taylor woke up to discover that she was experiencing a rare form of stroke, an arterio-venous malformation (AVM). Two and a half weeks later, on December 27, 1996, she underwent major brain surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) to remove a golf ball size blood clot that was placing pressure on the language centers in the left hemisphere of her brain.

It took eight years for Dr. Taylor to successfully rebuild her brain - from the inside out. In response to the swelling and trauma of the stroke, which placed pressure on her dominant left hemisphere, the functions of her right hemisphere blossomed. Among other things, she now creates and sells unique stained glass brains when commissioned to do so. In addition, she published a book about her recovery from stroke and the insights she gained into the workings of her brain.  The New York Times bestselling memoir is titled My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey.

In May of 2008, TIME  Magazine  chose Dr. Taylor as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World and she was the premiere guest on Oprah's Soul Series webcast. In addition, her interview with Oprah and Dr. Mehmet Oz on the Oprah Winfrey Show aired on October 21, 2008.

For more information about Dr. Taylor's professional life, please see her complete CV. Click here to listen to Dr. Taylor sing her Brain Bank Jingle.

Frank Miles

1

Presentation Title: "Laugh at Fear"

Biography:
A professional variety comedian with numerous television and Las Vegas credits, Frank Miles died in a hang gliding accident and was revived by emergency room doctors. True courage – he came to realize – is not facing death in daredevil pursuits. True courage is facing life every day.

After a full recovery, Miles left one successful career and embarked on another. Using comic monologues, juggling, music, and magic, he brought to life simple ideas that help shatter the self imposed limits of fear.

The response has been tremendous. Miles is now a sought after speaker-entertainer, and his keynote presentation “Laugh at Fear” has been honored with laughter and standing ovations from crowds as large as 14,000 people.

The Three Doctors

1       1

Presentation Title: "The Pact"

Biography:
A decade and a half ago, three teenage boys from the streets of Newark, NJ, made a pact: they would stick together, go to college, and become doctors. Now, over 15 years later, these three men have overcome obstacles and proudly bear the subtitle of doctors.

Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins and Rameck Hunt deliver a well needed and urgent message of hope and inspiration everywhere they go. Their key messages are: never underestimate the power of self-reliance and inner strength; attach a timeline and devise a strategy for achieving your goals; and surround yourself with like-minded people who are in line with your aspirations. Their effect on their communities has indeed been tremendous. These young men continue to speak out on life's challenges and together symbolize a new walk, talk, and attitude concerning facing the world.

The Three Doctors received the prestigious Essence Award for their accomplishments and leadership. Perhaps one of the greatest gifts one can give is the gift of self and these men do it often wholeheartedly. Children can identify with them, as well as at-risk teens and adults. Perhaps it's because of the impact of their message, perhaps the essence of their story. The reason is irrelevant, the results remarkable. The Three Doctors are young visionaries that bring forth
new hope and have become some of the most sought after public speakers.

Their first book, The Pact, was about the Three Doctors experiences and messages for life. They also wrote the inspirational children’s book, We Beat the Street.

Planetree Conference Hosts

Bayhealth Medical Center & Fauquier Health

Bayhealth Medical Center

Bayhealth Medical Center formed in January 1997 when Kent General Hospital, founded in 1927, and Milford Memorial Hospital, founded in 1938, merged to create a not-for-profit health care system dedicated improving the health status of all members of the Bayhealth community.  Now central and southern Delaware’s largest healthcare system, Bayhealth is comprised of Kent General and Milford Memorial Hospitals, Middletown Medical Center and numerous satellite facilities with more than 2,900 employees and 430 physicians.  As a leader in providing superior patient care, Bayhealth continues to improve services, expand programs and reach out to new communities.  This commitment to excellence has been recognized both statewide and nationwide.

HealthGrades, the nation’s leading healthcare ratings organization, presented Bayhealth with the 2009 clinical excellence award for overall critical care, placing Bayhealth’s clinical outcomes in the top ten percent nationally for each recognized area of care.  Bayhealth was also ranked Best in Delaware for Cardiac Surgery, for Cardiology Services, for Overall Critical Care and for Overall Cardiac Services.  In 2008, Bayhealth was named one of the nation’s Distinguished Hospitals by J.D. Power and Associates for providing an “Outstanding Inpatient Experience.”

Both Kent General and Milford Memorial Hospitals offer support groups for patients and families dealing with conditions such as cancer and diabetes.  Educational programs provide classes and information on tobacco cessation, childbirth, infant care, early pregnancy and more.  Both hospitals offers free weekly blood pressure and diabetes screenings and frequently provides free or low-cost screenings for breast, prostate, skin and colorectal cancers as well as stroke and osteoporosis assessments and health risk appraisals. Residents may call Bayhealth’s Physician Referral Line at 1-866-Bay-Docs or visit www.bayhealth.org to find physicians and services to meet their needs.

Kent General Hospital

Kent General Hospital is currently in the midst of a $168 million, 400,000 square foot expansion that will redefine the level of healthcare available to residents of central Delaware. The expansion will consist of a new Emergency Department double the size of the existing facility with shell space for future growth, an integrated Cancer Center that will bring radiation and medical oncology together, a Welcome Center, a Central Utility Building and a 375 car parking garage.   Construction is expected to be complete in 2011.  Kent General Hospital offers a comprehensive array of services to the residents of Central Delaware, including heart care; birth services; neonatal care; cancer care; inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical care; intensive, intermediate and coronary care; and a 24-hour emergency department.

Cardiac surgery procedures include coronary artery bypass grafts and heart valve repair and replacement, and interventional cardiology services include therapeutic cardiac catheterization and balloon angioplasty.  Kent General’s two-story Women’s Center provides state-of-the-art women’s services and improves high-risk deliveries and critical care to neonatal infants.  All maternity rooms are private.  Patients meeting certain criteria may also participate in Bayhealth’s cancer clinical trials.  Kent General was the first facility in Delaware to offer IMRT treatment for certain cancers. Diagnostic services include open MRI, PET CT, and general X-ray services.  In March 2006, Bayhealth became the first medical facility in the region to offer an advanced technology for the screening and diagnosis of many illnesses and injuries, particularly heart disease.    Other services include a Sleep Disorders Center; respiratory and neurodiagnostic services; physical, occupational, aquatic and speech therapies; and Lifestyles Fitness Center.

Milford Memorial Hospital

The award-winning Milford Memorial Hospital offers a comprehensive array of services to the residents of Southern and Central Delaware, including diagnostic imaging, family-centered birth services, cancer care, rehabilitation services, inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical care, and a 24-hour emergency department. Milford Memorial’s Total Joint Center opened in February 2006 to provide specialized orthopedic care for patients recovering from joint replacement surgeries in a patient-centered, healing environment.    Milford Memorial’s state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging center offers PET and CT scans, MRI (including Open MRI at the Outpatient Imaging Center), Nuclear Medicine and EKG tests, as well as laboratory and x-ray services.  Mothers-to-be can benefit from the warmth and convenience of giving birth and recovering in the same room, a Labor, Deliver, Recover and Post-Partum (LDRP) Suite.

In January 2002, a comprehensive, 12,000-square foot Cancer Center opened in Milford, providing radiation therapy and chemotherapy services under one roof, and the opportunity to participate in clinical trials.  The Inpatient Rehabilitation Center at Milford Memorial is a program unique to southern Delaware and offers a comprehensive therapy program dedicated to the treatment of individuals impaired by stroke, neurological disorders, accidents, arthritis and other disabling impairments.  Accredited by CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, the Inpatient Rehabilitation Center recently received a 2007 W. L. (Bill) Gore Award of Excellence.

Milford Memorial’s many other services include a Sleep Disorders Center, Lifestyles Fitness Center and other rehabilitation services including occupational therapy, speech pathology and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.

Fauquier Health

Fauquier Health, a Planetree-designated, non-profit health system serving rural/suburban Virginia, comprises Fauquier Hospital, an 86-bed fully accredited facility with 33-bed Emergency Department; Fauquier Health Rehabilitation and Nursing Center; the Fauquier Health LIFE Wellness Center; Fauquier Health Home Care Services; Fauquier Health Outpatient Rehabilitation; Fauquier Health Wound Healing Center and the Fauquier Health Sleep Center. It also has a 50 percent ownership in two joint ventures:  Fauquier Health Home Medical Store and the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas. Fauquier Health also operates three doctors’ offices: Fauquier Health Endocrinology, Fauquier Health Infectious Diseases and Fauquier Health Internal Medicine at Lake Manassas.

The patient perspective is the driving force for Fauquier, where routine human interactions are seen as opportunities to convey care, concern and compassion. A patient concierge talks with every inpatient to discover and address any concerns they may have. All employees participate in workshops that reinforce the importance of simple behaviors like eye contact, escorting rather than pointing, making introductions and providing a consistent flow of pertinent information to patients.

This emphasis on meeting patients’ educational needs is an organizational priority. An on-site Health Resource Center provides access to literature on health and wellness topics. Open access to medical records empowers patients with information while promoting an environment of openness. The hospital developed an automated system that not only tracks medications prescribed internally, but also electronically gathers patients’ external medication records instantaneously.

Unrestricted visiting hours and overnight accommodations for family members have inspired a shift in how patients’ loved ones are viewed. They are considered critical partners in the patient’s care whose presence and involvement are actively encouraged. Fauquier has taken great care to create a comfortable, calming and healing physical environment. All patient rooms are private and feature Internet connections. The hospital’s color palette, furnishings, lighting, solariums and art all work together to create an ambiance of warmth and healing.

Food served at the hospital looks and tastes fresh and appetizing. Room service delivery to patient rooms means patients and visitors can order what they want when they want it. Volunteers are an important part of Fauquier Health’s effort to provide the best healthcare possible. From dog handlers working in the pet therapy program to residents helping out in the Emergency Department, volunteers are welcomed and appreciated in every part of the health system.

In accordance with the Planetree philosophy, Fauquier Hospital’s caregivers are committed to being attentive patients’ and families’ physical and emotional needs, as well as their spiritual needs. A welcoming, non-denominational chapel provides unlimited opportunities for reflection and prayer, and regularly scheduled meditation sessions and prayer services build a sense of community.

Fauquier Health also expanded community outreach.  Lectures, seminars, even medical “camps” for young people provide health education for local residents. These patient-centered initiatives mean one thing for Fauquier Hospitals’ patients – better care. The hospital continues to consistently out-perform state and national averages on key quality measures.

The hospital recently opened a wellness center that uses exercise and education to facilitate good health in a sunny, spa-like environment.  In addition, the 33-room Emergency Department and waiting area were completed in late 2008.

The health system is also building an assisted living facility that will feature 72 units, 12 dedicated to a memory support unit. Completion is slated for 2010.
