Nelson Junior serves as a PCC Consultant in Brazil, bringing more than two decades of experience in clinical care, hospital leadership, and quality improvement. His career reflects a deep and longstanding commitment to advancing person-centered care and strengthening partnerships among patients, families, and healthcare teams.
Nelson began his professional journey in nursing in the 1990s, during a time when care models often limited patient and family participation. Motivated to elevate the human experience in healthcare, he pursued advanced nursing training and served as a registered nurse in an intensive care unit for over a decade. In this role, he worked on the front lines of care delivery, supporting patients and families during critical moments with empathy, compassion, and clinical excellence.
While at the same institution, Nelson led the development of a center of excellence in bariatric surgery that achieved international certification. This experience strengthened his expertise in multidisciplinary team leadership, high-stakes decision-making, and the integration of patients and families as active partners in care planning.
After a period of entrepreneurial leadership, where he further developed his operational and organizational management skills, Nelson returned his focus fully to healthcare. A deeply personal family experience reinforced his conviction that effective communication and patient and family engagement are essential to safe, high-quality care. This perspective further aligned his work with the principles of Planetree’s person-centered care model.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nelson specialized in quality and patient safety and has since worked as a consultant supporting high-impact hospital transformation initiatives. His work centers on strengthening cultures of partnership, compassion, and excellence across healthcare organizations in Brazil.
